Russell had six months left on his contract at Darlington
Forest Green Rovers have signed goalkeeper Sam Russell from Darlington on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
The 29-year-old was released by the Quakers on Wednesday after handing in his notice to the administration-hit club, external for breach of contract.
"This is a big signing and will provide a big boost to the squad, as we believe Sam is the best keeper in the league," said manager David Hockaday.
"With his Football League experience he can help take us to the next level."
Russell started his career with Middlesborough before spells at Scunthorpe, Rochdale and Wrexham.
