County Championship: Kent recover from early losses

Kent recovered from losing early wickets against Surrey on a rain-affected first day at the Oval, where just 30 overs were bowled.

After losing Joe Denly for one in the second over, opener Daniel Bell-Drummond hit 39 from 51 balls.

Surrey shared wickets between 17-year-old debutant Sam Curran, Tom Curran (2-30) and Zafar Ansari.

Sam Northeast (45) top-scored for the visitors as bad light ended play early on day one.

The hosts won the toss and put Kent into bat - and Sam Curran got a wicket with just his fourth ball when he bowled Denly.

Adam Ball fell shortly afterwards for nine, but Bell-Drummond and Northeast played positively to increase the run rate before Ansari got Bell-Drummond lbw.

Following a long rain delay in the afternoon, play resumed at 17:30 BST and Tom Curran grabbed the wicket of Northeast in the final session.

"Despite only 30 overs being bowled, this was still a pulsating passage of cricket.

"Sam Curran, at 17 years old, was handed his Championship debut and bowled Joe Denly from his fourth ball with a cracking delivery.

"He took the new ball with brother Tom, who then dismissed Adam Ball for nine.

"There's a better forecast for Tuesday and both sides will be looking to make up for lost time."
