Forget Dennis Taylor's famous glasses and Steve "interesting" Davis' short back and sides - the snooker legends have given us some nailbiting finals, but the new kids on the block are upping the stakes. The style stakes, that is.

Ronnie O' Sullivan
Rocket Ronnie perfects the brooding look, complete with hairgrips.

With this year's World Snooker Championship's prize fund adding up to a whopping £1,378,920, it's no wonder that the young guns are adopting the sartorial look of millionaire playboys.

Take "Rocket" Ronnie O'Sullivan, literally a whizz on the green baize, he's cultivated a brooding Heathcliff look on the sidelines, complete with chestnut mane.

Then there's Paul Hunter, just 26-years-old and a leading contender for the Crucible crown in 2004, he's bending it like Beckham at the table with flowing blond locks held at bay by a zig-zag hairband.

Paul Hunter
Paul Hunter bends it like Beckham.

Last year's champion Mark Williams might like to keep his hairdo simple, but he's got va va voom too. Well, to be precise, he's got a Ferrari.

Then take Shamir. By day the 30-year-old works for this very website. By night he likes nothing better than a spot of DJ-ing and socialising. All in his trademark casual sporty look.

Hoody? Check. Utility pants? Check. Side slung rucksack? Check. All well and good for a night knocking around the Devonshire Quarter, but could he cut it with the creme de la creme of the Crucible?

Teaching him the art of the 147 break is a bit of a tall order, so we call in a crack team of makeover experts. Read on to find out how to make you (or the scruff in your life) snooker-suave...

Round One: The Hair

Shamir's got an enviably thick mop of dark hair, perfect for the Rocket Ronnie look, but it's not been cut in months and that just ain't suave.

Men's hairdresser John Taylor has seen all the players in his barber shop just around the corner from the Crucible. He's fiddled with the fringes of BBC commentary team Steve Davis and John Parrot, but hasn't forgotten the original wild man of snooker, Alex Higgins.

Unfortunately our model's hair is so wild it might just go to seed, so it's a good thing stylist Rachel Donnelly is on hand to give it a good grooming.

Round Two: The Clothes

After years going casual in sports-cum-streetwear, most blokes could be forgiven for being a little intimidated by the dressy look. After all, anything with a collar smacks of the office.

Luckily Richard Price, Menswear Manager at John Lewis, knows a thing or two about putting a look together, not to mention the intricacies of tie-ing ties.

Remember guys, keep Messrs O'Sullivan and Hunter in mind with sharp, dark coloured shirts and toning ties, bow or otherwise. It's a gent meets gangster look, just avoid the white shirt (too wine-waiter) or anything tweed (too Guy Ritchie).

Richard concurs: this season menswear, like women's fashion is all about the fifties. Hawaiian shirts, flower prints and sharp suiting are all set for a comeback.

Round Three: The Transformation

All good makeovers end up with a photo-shoot. In the absence of Trinny and Susannah giving instruction on how to walk, we're relying on some gentle encouragement and the confidence that comes from the haircut and clothes. Keep it charming lads....
