 | | Lisa Maffia headlines on the main stage. See her for free. |
Take a bunch of breakdance crews, a So Solid star and a whole lot of rap and garage DJs. Add a freestyle skate jam, top notch graffiti artists and a generous dollop of local talent and what have you got? 3DOM: the Sheffield free festival with a fuller flava. Devonshire Green in the city centre will be bouncing to an urban beat from 12 noon to 7pm on Sunday 24 August. For those with Bank Holiday energy to spare after the bucking bronco, barfly and bouncy castles, there's an Afterparty with music ranging from hiphop to r'n'b and reggae.
Music
She may be the blingiest UK diva of the moment but the So Solid sound won't cost a thing when Lisa Maffia headlines the 3DOM stage at Devonshire Green.
Bling bling | | Cutting it: Ian Sanderson from Pitsmoor may get his big break. |
But there's a whole five hours of music to dip into before the star takes her turn. 1Xtra rap stars Rodney P and Skitz will be rubbing shoulders with legendary producer Joe Buhdha, Mista Jam and whole host of DJs. Ian Sanderson, a singer from Pitsmoor, didn't expect to be up on stage with the stars. His day job is as a trainee graphic designer with the NonStop Foundation, who are the event's organisers. Big break He got his first break at Butlins and can be found singing in the pubs and clubs of Sheffield in his spare time. "3DOM will be a bigger kind of audience to anything I'm used to - outdoors and much bigger - but appearing on the same bill as an established chart star like Lisa Maffia has to be the best opportunity I have had so far." said Ian. | | Oris Jay |
Let's hope he can cut it with the crowd - turn up at ten past two to hear Ian make his debut. Homecoming Perhaps Ian will be getting some tips on stagefright from established DJ and producer Oris Jay - who also grew up in Pitsmoor. He's stayed true to his underground sound over the last decade or so in music and has tasted critical and commercial success with his break infused garage. His single "Trippin" charted in 2002 and 1xtra listeners should be familiar with "Test Dis", his collaboration with Ms Dynamite earlier this year. Listen out for Oris Jay's set at quarter past four and see left for a full main stage time table.
Skate and breakdance | | Skateboarding definitely allowed! |
Dust off your board for a freestyle skate jam, which will be going on all day on Devonshire Green skatepark. There'll be lots of prizes and giveaways, and of course a booming soundtrack all afternoon. For those who prefer to watch there'll be B-boy action on the main stage. Leading breakdance crews TruMasters, Under Attack, Trinity Crew and Major Props will all be performing live. For fun at a more laid back pace there's face-painting, nail art and other craft stalls.
Graffiti Art | | Urban graffiti: the TDK crew in the 80s |
3DOM's going back to its creative roots this year with live spray can art demonstrations from internationally renowned artists Daim and Part 2. Festival organisers the NonStop Foundation grew out of the Too Damn Kreative (TDK) crew - a collective of graffiti artists, dancers and DJs which came together in the late 80s. Back in the day the collective designed graffiti art (not graffiti writing - to discover the difference, just turn up!) for cities as far afield as Edinburgh and London, and even designed a mural for Prince Charles. These days their creativity has blossomed into a graphic design company and NonStop are helping young people to unleash their talent through design and graffiti workshops and support for up and coming DJs. Get a taste of graffiti art on the day at Devonshire Green.
