FA Cup semi-final 1993: the winning goalFor 40 years BBC Radio Sheffield has been first for sport in South Yorkshire, bringing you live coverage from all the big matches and games. One of the biggest occasions for the region came in May 1993 when Sheffield United met Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley for the FA Cup semi final. 7. Dinah Maiden talks contraceptionAnother of BBC Radio Sheffield's much loved broadcasters of yesteryear, Dinah Maiden was one of the first local broadcasters to ever host a phone-in. Just as on Rony's Forum now, the callers were often full of surprising and interesting stories. Michael Cooke takes on an 88 year old manOne of the best loved and most successful presenters in BBC Radio Sheffield's history was the late and great, Michael Cooke. Listen to him, on top form, refusing to take no for an answer with a stubborn interviewee - an 88-year-old man who was refusing to move out of his home, despite the fact that all his neighbours had gone and their homes had been bulldozed. ![]() Javelins 5. The World Student Games, 1991South Yorkshire became the focus of international attention in the summer of 1991 when the World Student Games came to town. BBC Radio Sheffield covered the ceremonies, broadcast from the student villages and mingled in the city centre meeting locals and visitors. Miners Strike, 1984-5One of the biggest stories BBC Radio Sheffield has covered in the last 40 years is undoubtedly the 1984-5 Miners Strike. ![]() Many local pits and picketers were the focus of attention, none more so than in Orgreave near Rotherham, and what has since become known as The Battle of Orgreave in 1984. The Queen at Hillsborough (1977)The Royal Family have made many trips to South Yorkshire in the last 40 years, and BBC Radio Sheffield has usually been amongst the crowds to greet them. In her Jubilee year, 1977, the Queen made a special visit to Sheffield. She went to Hillsborough to meet hundreds of school children who put on arts displays and performances for her in the park. ![]() The Wombles, 1970s Do you remember this event?
