It's been full steam ahead for programmers at Devon-based computer firm, Railwaves.

The coders have spent months working to recreate the beauty of the West Somerset Railway on computer screens.

They took photos of the entire length of the line, which runs between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, and have been busy transferring them into a virtual world.

Pulling power

The first train pulled out of Watchet station in March 1862, but by the 1970s the single-track branch line had fallen into disrepair.

The West Somerset Railway was rescued and restored in 1976, and since then it's become one of Somerset's most popular tourist attractions.

Not just for trainspotters

The computer simulation lets you drive a steam or diesel train on the West Somerset Railway.

The program has the scenery, three driveable locomotives as well as authentic rolling stock, so it's sure to be a must-have for anoraks everywhere.

Simulation of a stream train in Minehead in the rain
It doesn't always rain in Minehead!

But lots of people without the obligatory sandwiches, timetable and flask of coffee will also be up for the challenge of doing something that many of today's rail operators seem to find increasingly taxing: making the trains run on time.

All aboard!

If you're a budding train driver hoping for thrills and spills at 125mph, you're going to be a bit disappointed.

After all, the top speed of the West Somerset Railway's trains is a relaxed 25mph, and the game reflects that.

The new game is an add-on for Microsoft's Train Simulator game, so you'll need to get that too.

What do YOU think?

I thik it is a good game to play in doors

Tim Thomas
I have bought the West Somerset train sim and am quite disapppointed by the quality. The first thing noticeable is the very poor sound effects. The locomotive sounds do not match the speed of the train at all. The next significant fault is the totalk lack of simulated life, human and animal, apart froma few moving vehicles occasionally. There is no life on the trains whatsoever!

willis
