Glasto-goers urged to think about refugees

This summer, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) is setting up camp at Glastonbury.

Festival-goers are being asked to spare a moment while camping out to consider the number of refugees in Chad - it's roughly the same number of people as go to Glasto!

Festival aid will come in the bouncy blue form of beach balls, and small-scale kids clubs will relieve tired parents for an hour or two.

But the real message is much more serious...

Camp challenge quiz

Instead of distributing blankets and water at Glasto, UNHCR will be handing out a camp challenge.

The pop-quiz draws comparisons between the Festival and a refugee population of a similar size, but very different nature, in Chad, Africa.

Here's an example of a camp challenge question:

Glastonbury is the UK's largest music festival. This year about 150,000 people are expected to attend. Roughly how many of the 1 million displaced Sudanese people fled over the border to Chad in the last few months?

A: Less than half as many as the number of Glasto-goers (55,000)
B: About the same number as Glasto-goers (125,000)

C: Twice as many as the number of Glasto-goers (300,000)

The idea is to persuade Glasto revellers to spare a thought for Sudanese refugees, who have been forced to camp in more life-threatening conditions.

Larry Hollingworth, from the UNHCR, said: "In a small way Glastonbury-goers live like refugees. We hope that this will make them more sympathetic to the plight of those living with the reality in Chad.

"At worst, Glastonbury-goers are escaping a dull job; refugees in Chad are fleeing for their lives.

"Whereas revellers can go home after three days, Sudanese refugees face an uncertain future with no home to go back to."

Humanitarian crisis in Chad

Described by the UN as "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world", the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan has displaced 1 million people since January 2004.

Many of the displaced have terrible stories to tell - they have fled for their lives, but face death in Chad due to a lack of resources.

Actress Angelina Jolie, who is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, urged people to pay attention to the issue: "UNHCR has termed the refugee crisis in Chad an invisible emergency.

"Without relief assistance and immediate relocation to safer sites, tens of thousands of innocent lives may be lost."

UNHCR is racing against time to relocate and assist 125,000 people who have fled to eastern Chad.
