Three people walking through Glastonbury's mud

Glastonbury Festival's weather predictions

The last few Glasto's have been washed out, with heavy rain causing flooded tents and slippery mud. Will this year be any different? BBC weatherman Richard Angwin and festival organiser Michael Eavis give their predictions. But who will be right?

Richard Angwin:

The weather interest in the Glastonbury Festival is largely concentrated on the Thursday to Sunday period when the acts start to perform.

But the days before the Festival starts and the Monday, when many people finally leave the site, are really more important because these are the periods when any soft ground at Worthy Farm is most likely to be churned up by foot and vehicular traffic.

Fortunately, it looks like remaining relatively dry in the lead up to Glastonbury 2008. It will stay dry until Tuesday night when there will be some light rain for a time but by dawn on Wednesday the weather will be bright and breezy with a few light showers.

It will remain breezy through much of Thursday (which will help to dry the ground) and it is likely that it will stay dry across the site with temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius.

Friday will start dry and bright but it will become cloudy and windy with outbreaks of rain during the evening and night. Drier weather will return by Saturday and although it will remain rather cloudy, there should be nothing more than a few light showers. (By this time, the ground may be slightly muddy but the ground will dry out during the day as the wind is expected to remain quite brisk.)

Although it is still a long way off, Sunday and Monday look set to be mainly dry and bright with a brisk westerly breeze.

So to summarise Glastonbury 2008: A good deal of dry weather. A few showers by day. More general rain Friday night. Breezy. Cool-ish nights but reasonably warm by day.

Michael Eavis:

I predict on Friday that we've got sunshine up until about four o'clock in the afternoon and then we'll get one millimetre of rain which is nothing; it's just enough to dampen down the site and dampen down the dust and things.

Until then there's no rain at all not Wednesday or Thursday. Friday one millimetre of rain - fantastic. I see the stall holders have got sun cream at the top of the list now so they've got the weather message.

It does not matter how prepared you are - in 2005 & 2007 we had all the right stuff, but it felt like hell on earth. I will never in to glasto again!! Far too commercial now.

We don't care what the weather is like, as long as we are there to experience it!!!!

This is my sixth time at Glasto and the sun has always shone for us so - no worries!!

It's interesting to find that half of all the exceptional falls of rain in June have occurred between the 23rd and the 30th going back thirty years. The end of June is a time when the weather is starting to reach the summer heat so it's not surprising that sometimes we get tropical downpours as we had last year, and in fact in 2006 on the 25th and in 2005 on the 28th when we had quite a good thunderstorm. But this year we seem to have got a weather pattern that doesn't suggest any extremes at all. Fairly normal temperatures, variable cloud, poss a little bit of rain but certainly no thunderstorms or very long periods of rain as far as I can see.

I reckon it's going to be gorgeous for Glastonbury, maybe not too hot, we don't want it too hot. Maybe the odd shower, but you’ve got to keep the dust down as well. I think they're all in for a very good time down there. Temperature-wise I think it's going to be in the upper teens, we might even break into the 20s…I think there's going to be lucky this year and apart from the odd shower, I think it's going to be sunshine with the odd cloud floating past!'

Ben Whiley, student from Wells
I the weather for Friday will be cloudy and possibly showery. The temps mid 15 degrees, mid 15, 16 and 17. I don't think it's going to be that warm for the festival I reckon it's going to be quite cloudy. Clouds will roll in. It's Glastonbury after all so I think people should expect the norm!'

Clare Morgans
This is not my first festival but it is my first time at Glastonbury and my fingers have been crossed for plesant weather. However, go prepared and it will still be fun. You can't go wrong with an ex army poncho!
