Tour of Briatain road closures

Roads in Somerset are set to close on Tuesday as the county hosts the start of the Tour of Britain.

Taunton Road Closures

These roads will be closed from 3am until 7pm:

Corporation Street
Tower Street
Castle Green
Castle Way
High Street (from Espresso)
Fore Street
North Street
Hammet Street
Magdalene Street
Lower Middle Street
Middle Street
Bridge Street
The Bridge
Church Square
Foundry Road
Whirligig Lane

The South West stage of the UK's cycling race will see rolling road closures along the route from Yeovilton to Taunton via Exmoor.

As the race will feature 102 riders, including stage winners from the Tour de France, the roads will only be closed for the length of time it takes for the cyclists to race through.

Fifty six motorcyclists, including police and civilian escorts, will accompany the riders to block the side roads and oncoming traffic.

The convoy will take approximately 15 minutes to pass a single point, but if the race splits significantly, the motorcyclists will also split into groups to allow traffic to flow in between.

Taunton town centre will be a hub of activity all day, as it is hosting the race finish. Temporary one way systems will also be put in place from 3am until 8pm at Park Street (westward), The Crescent (southward) and in the Wood Street area.

As the race approaches, from approximately 2pm until 3pm the following roads will be closed:

  • Canon Street from the junction of St James Street to its junction with Magdalene Street
  • Priory Avenue from its junction with St James Street to Augustine Street
  • Station Road from its junction with Bridge Street to Belvedere Road
  • Staplegrove Road from its junction with Greenway Road to its junction with Station Road
  • Bindon Road between its junction with Hudson Way and Staplegrove Road

Parking restrictions will apply on Staplegrove Road all day and Whirligig and Castle Green car parks will be closed. Canon Street and Coal Orchard car parks will be open but access will be restricted as the race approaches Taunton.

Any vehicles parked on the affected roads at the times stated will be towed away in order to ensure the safety of the race for riders and spectators.

Councillor Justin Robinson, deputy leader of Somerset County Council, said: "We recognise that the road closures may cause some inconvenience to individuals living and working in the affected areas and we are grateful for their patience and support in helping to make sure this is a great day out for all.

"It will be an exciting day for Somerset, and will help to raise the county’s profile both regionally and nationally."
