Somerset Rebels 52-38 Glasgow Tigers

By contributor Ian Belcher
In a thoroughly entertaining meeting, almost every heat having racing of the highest quality, it was Somerset who seemed to pick up the vital places when it mattered to take a first-leg lead in this Cup encounter.

Simon Walker, Jordan Frampton and Danny Warwick especially chipped in with some excellent rides, Warwick probably have his best meeting to date in Rebel colours.

However, in Shane Parker and Robert Ksiezak, who was a constant thorn in the side of the home riders, the Tigers made sure that Somerset did not run away with this meeting to leave Sunday's return leg delicately poised.

Whilst Somerset drew first blood with a 5-1 in the opening heat, the Tigers hit back two races later when the Parker/Ksiezak combination took full advantage of a poor start by the Rebel pairing to record a maximum heat win of their own.

After four races, the visitors held a two-point lead, but three 5-1s in the next four heats for the Rebels put them back in control of the match, Walker's fourth-to-second ride in heat six being typical of the night's racing.

With the match slowly slipping through their fingers, the visitors had little left to do other than try to contain the Somerset advantage ahead of the return leg.

Come heat 13, it was time for the Tigers to bring the tactical ride into play, but with Trent Leverington trailing in a poor last their chance was gone.

The last throw of the die for the Tigers came in the next heat, with Parker replacing David McAllen and going off 15 metres as a tactical substitute.

With Ksiezak taking the lead from the tapes, Glasgow hoped that Parker could join him up front as he soon caught up with the Somerset duo of Warwick and Frampton.

Riding a race belying his experience, Frampton gamely held off Parker for the best part of a lap before the Tigers' skipper tried an inside pass on the Somerset youngster.

Far from being fazed by this, Frampton held his line with the inevitable consequence that Parker brought him clattering to the ground, earning himself an exclusion in the process.

It was a final 4-2 heat win for Somerset. Parker just got up on the line to pip Emil Kramer for second place, thereby returning the compliment on Kramer for sneaking a win on the line in heat 12.

The Somerset fans went home happy with the win, after an excellent night of racing.
