Jay Herne's night got off to a bad start when he shed a chain and damaged the rear of his machine in a first-bend collision. His second race saw him suffer a big lift at the start and another immediate retirement. It wasn't until his third race that he actually showed what he could do, with a win from behind in a respectable 61.23, after a tardy start. The bad start was probably not his fault as the gremlins had also got into the starting-gate equipment, causing the last two races to be started on the green light. The main points scoring for the Giants came from Arlo Bugueja, who put on an impressive show with two wins and a second place. The second of his wins came in the same race as Herne's second abortive attempt to get away. It was completed from the gate, in a very smart 60.70. James Williams was another who had a night he would like to forget, with two retirements and a third place for his trouble. A measure of his woes can be seen in the fact that he never started a race on the same bike that he came to the tapes on, having to swap bikes on every occasion. Nicky Mallett completed all his races for a single-point return. So the Giants suffered their first defeat in this series of challenge matches, but the plus side was a fine display from the USA Dream Team, who are in Britain until around the middle of May Such is the impression they have made on their tour, that I am sure they will be welcomed back any time they want to come in the future. The other bright spot was a first look for Somerset fans at two up-and-coming young prospects in Herne and Bugueja. |
