The Stars had the greater strength in depth, and this, coupled with an inspired choice of guest at reserve, was too much for the Rebels. The final scoreline was somewhat flattering to the home side. | | Danny Warwick after he fell in heat two |
Although Somerset took the early advantage in the match, the sides reached the halfway stage level pegging. With the final third of the meeting beckoning, the Rebels had eked out a two-point lead, and the home fans were hoping that this would spur the team on to a home victory. It was to prove a false dawn though, as two maximum 5-1 heat wins to the visitors in heats 11 and 14 swung the match the way of King's Lynn, the latter of these sealed the meeting for the Stars. There was still time for some controversy to round off the meeting involving Zetterstrom and Nermark in the final race. Riding a very unnecessarily aggressive first bend, Nermark rode Zorro to the very outer limits of the track, to put him, supposedly, out of contention for the race. Obviously fired up by this, Zetterstrom gave chase, passing Mills a lap later and set about hunting down Nermark. Catching his prey, as the pair of them came off the final bend with a lap to go, Zetterstrom caught up alongside Nermark who lost drive. Nermark's desperate attempt to thwart Zorro's pass ended in tears, as he came to grief along the home straight. To add insult to injury, on picking himself up from the track, Nermark found that referee Dave Robinson had excluded him from the race and awarded Somerset the heat! | | Magnus Zetterstrom (left) in heat 13 |
From a Somerset perspective, whilst Zetterstrom and Kramer did what was expected of them, they received very little backup from the other members of the team. Hawkins' heat win in heat four was the last by a home rider outside of the top two. That coupled with nine last places is not the type of form one would expect from a home team with play-off ambitions. |
