The final three-point-winning margin flattered the Fen Tigers in the final analysis - the Rebels had sewn up the meeting with two heats still remaining, providing nine of the 15 race winners in the process. Despite the shock of seeing Magnus Zetterstrom come out second best in the opening heat, Somerset hit back. The Rebels established a four-point lead after the opening five races, only for Mildenhall to draw level in heat six, courtesy of a maximum 5-1 heat win after both Ritchie Hawkins and Tomas Suchanek made poor starts to hand the race advantage to the opposition duo. This was, however, the last time the home side really threatened the Rebels, and with every member of the side making valuable contributions at vital moments in the match, Somerset were in no mood to let this one slip from their grasp. Deservedly voted man of the match by the Mildenhall supporters' club, Emil Kramer was only denied a maximum score when referee Dave Robinson ordered a restart of the final race. He and Zetterstrom had snatched the lead after a tight first turn, but the inevitable happened in the re-run - the Mildenhall pairing secured a 5-1 maximum heat win of their own! Kramer and Zetterstrom received great support from the rest of the team: Jordan Frampton, Ritchie Hawkins and Simon Walker all had excellent matches. Frampton's combining with Kramer for a 5-1 in heat 10 and Walker's superb win in heat eight were just two of the highlights from what was a thoroughly entertaining match. |
