Somerset Rebels 52-41 Mildenhall Fen Tigers

By contributor Ian Belcher
Come the final reckoning, the Somerset Rebels claimed victory by 11 points, but there must have been a few jitters amongst the Somerset fans as the Fen Tigers closed to within three points with just four heats remaining.

Aggregate score: Somerset Rebels 90-95 Mildenhall Fen Tigers

The home side, however, were in no mood to let this one slip and with Emil Kramer recording his second successive home maximum, the Rebels were well worth the final margin of victory.

As is the norm at the Oak Tree Arena, the racing was again of the highest quality, and after the opening exchanges, the home side had its nose in front, albeit by just two points.

It was the middle sector of the match where Somerset showed their power. They looked to be cruising to the meeting victory as well as the bonus point, as the meeting entered its final third.

There was an air of disbelief around the Oak Tree Arena, as for the first time this season Magnus Zetterstrom had his colours by a visiting rider when Legault beat Zorro in heat 10.

Despite this, however, the Rebels were still 10 points to the good.

Making a lightning start, Tacey had the early advantage but was under constant pressure from Somerset's Ritchie Hawkins.

Behind them, Danny Warwick and Tom Madsen were having a ding-dong battle of their own for third place.

As the riders started the final lap, it looked as if the Somerset duo had done enough to restrict the tactical ride to just a three-point advantage for the Fen Tigers.

Madsen, however, had ideas of his own, and slipped inside both Warwick and Hawkins to join his partner for the maximum 8-1 heat win to bring Mildenhall back within three points of their hosts.

But with the Rebels recording two maximum 5-1 heat wins in the final three races, Zetterstrom's win over Legault in the final race giving the Swede particular pleasure, Somerset ran out the comfortable winners.
