Somerset Rebels 65-25 Newport Wasps

By contributor Ian Belcher
The Somerset Rebels romped to their biggest home win at Premier League level, but if ever a scoreline belied the quality of the racing, then this was it.

Virtually every heat had riders passing and re-passing each other, but the home riders had far too much firepower for the Wasps to contend with.

The Rebels recorded eight maximum heat wins and provided all bar one of the heat winners - Chris Schramm was the lone winner for Newport in heat eight.

Somerset had to do it the hard way, as Newport consistently had the advantage into the first bend, only to find home riders swept past them.

In his opening ride, Newport's Phil Morris discovered just how determined the Rebels were.

He had led Hawkins on the opening lap, but the young Rebel picked up incredible speed down the home straight, putting Morris under pressure he could not cope with. As the pair entered the first bend, the Welshman came to grief.

As a contest, however, the match was over well before the halfway stage, and the only question left for the second half of the meeting was just by how many points Somerset would eventually win.

With Zetterstrom, Kramer and Hawkins all recording maximums, and the other team members recording at least a paid win each, the answer was an emphatic one.

There was a nasty-looking incident in heat two as the riders entered the first bend with the riders making an even break.

Simmons' turn into the bend caused a domino effect with Frampton running into Karl Mason, who took a spectacular tumble.

Luckily the Newport number seven was able to walk back to the pits and continue the meeting.

For Newport, their new Aussie signing, Tom Hedley, was a consistent thorn in the side of the Rebels and looks a good prospect for the future.

He even had the temerity to lead Zetterstrom and Kramer in the nominated heat 15 for a lap, before the Somerset duo passed either side of him as they took to the second lap.

All in all, this was an excellent all-round performance by the Rebels against a Newport side that never gave up the fight, but ultimately had no answer to this powerhouse Somerset display.
