Somerset Giants 25-9 BAL Select

By contributor Dave Thompson
The Somerset Giants concluded the second half of the Premier Trophy tie on 13 April 2007 with another challenge match as a warmup in preparation to the upcoming Academy League series.

Academy Challenge Match

Their opponents tonight were a British Academy League Select, again including a mixture of abilities.

This is what this level is all about, giving the opportunity for riders to gain much-needed experience.

As with their previous matches, the Giants proved to be too strong for their opponents, who were depleted by the non-appearance of the experienced Brendon Johnson - he was unable to take his place in the lineup.

Sam Wyatt stood in for Jamie Pickard, who was on duty for his Conference League Club, Plymouth Devils.

The performance of the night, once again for the Giants, was that of Matt Bates.

He scored a maximum nine points from his three rides, which he completed without being seriously challenged, and in some quick times, the best of which was 61.43.

He was backed up by two good showings from Oliver Gay (7+2), who again demonstrated how much he has improved over the last 12 months, and Andy Braithwaite (8+1).

Braithwaite continues to impress at this level, dropping his only point to Bates.

The BAL Select side were seriously short-manned, and also lost Sam Wyatt, who did not re-appear after his first heat fall, although he had ridden well up to that point.

Nicky Mallett was probably their most experienced rider on show, and he took a couple of good second places in his five-point return.

The only other Select rider to post any points was Alex McLeod, who had a second and two third spots for his four points.

So another good showing from the Giants, as they ran out 25-9 winners, and supplied every heat winner in this tie.

The Giants appear to be one of the stronger Academy sides in this area of the country, but have yet to meet opposition from some of the bigger clubs.
