The Sprockets are managed by Malcolm Holloway, a man well known to Somerset fans for his exploits for the Rebels in the early days of the then-fledgling club. It was the Giants who dominated the tie, providing the winners of every heat, as they ran out winners by 24-12. Matt Bates, always a good performer at this level, was in great form with a very smooth showing to return a nine-point maximum. He was ably supported by Oliver Gay and Andy Braithwaite, who took two wins for a second place behind Bates for his paid maximum. Oliver Gay may have put an extra point on the board had it not been for a fall in the opening heat. As it was, he remounted and gave chase to such effect that he only failed by a tyre's tread to grab second place on the line. Gay is showing improvement in every meeting and is getting faster by the week. Following his paid maximum the previous week, James Williams had a quiet meeting, which ended with just two points and a spectacular fall in his last race. Despite this, he is showing signs of improving quickly. The Sprockets fielded two fairly inexperienced riders: Scott Pike and Sam Wyatt, but backed them up with Ben Reade and Marc Andrews, both of whom are capable of holding their own in this company. Sam Wyatt had a torrid evening, having to start off 15 metres in his first ride after touching the tapes and hitting the dirt twice in his last two rides. Scott Pike didn't fair much better, with just one point from three completed races. Reade and Andrews were the Sprockets' mainstays, with five points and six points respectively, but they had no answer to the Giants' top three. Although only a challenge, it was ridden in competitive spirit and was a good workout for both sides. It provided much-needed track time for the more able riders, and equally much-needed experience for those learning their trade. After all, that is what this league is all about. |
