Up until a dramatic heat 11, there were never more than two points between the sides, the scores being level as the meeting entered its final third. Somerset fans must have thought that lady luck had smiled upon their team, as Rockets skipper, Chris Neath, was excluded from heat 11 under the two-minute rule, Adam Roynon coming in as Neath's replacement to partner the very impressive Tai Woffinden. The Rye House pair obviously did not read the script, as they both made a great start and showed maturity beyond their years to hold off Somerset's Ritchie Hawkins to take a maximum heat win. This gave the Rockets a crucial four-point advantage, the points return from the Rye House reserve pairing, compared to their Somerset counterparts, being a major factor behind the Rockets' victory. With Tommy Allen and Woffinden adding a further 5-1 over Tomas Suchanek and Jordan Frampton in the penultimate race, Rye House maintained their unbeaten start to the season. On this showing, they certainly look a good bet for honours this year. | | Zetterstrom, Robson, Walker and Roynon |
It must be said, however, that the Rockets' task was made somewhat easier by poor performances from some of the Rebels septet, only Emil Kramer giving maximum man Magnus Zetterstrom any real support. Simon Walker was solid enough, and Ritchie Hawkins' pass on Steve Boxall and Allen in heat seven certainly warmed the fans on what was a bitterly cold night at the Oak Tree Arena. In the final reckoning, Rye House had far greater strength in depth than Somerset. Zetterstrom apart, with the home side producing just four other heat winners, coupled with ten last places, this is not the type of return that is going to win matches for the Rebels. No doubt the new promotion at Somerset will be looking for a much-improved performance going forward. |
