Aggregate: Somerset Rebels 91-97 Rye House RocketsThe meeting was always going to be a tall order for the Rebels given that Rye House are one of just three teams in the Premier League with a 100% home record. The Rebels were also without their inspirational number one, Magnus Zetterstrom, who was competing in the Swedish Championship Final. The omens were not good for an away victory. The Rebels management, however, selected well in their choice of guest to cover for the absent Zetterstrom - Rye House track expert Tomas Topinka of King's Lynn. Topinka did not let the Rebels down, scoring 11 points from his five rides, and was a constant thorn in the Rockets' side throughout a humid evening's racing at the Hoddesdon race-way. On a track devoid of much grip, gating was to be of a premium, and the home riders had the upper hand in this department, consistently heading the Somerset riders into the first bend. The die was generally cast after the first bend was completed as there was little opportunity to pass on a slick surface. Somerset's 12-point aggregate advantage from the match held at the Oak Tree Arena was soon whittled away by the home side. By heat eight, the Rockets led 30-18 to wipe out the deficit. The Rebels stuck to their task, however, and whilst the actual meeting was beyond them by heat 12, they managed to take the bonus point to a last heat decider. Despite the best efforts of Topinka and Emil Kramer, Somerset's only heat winner of the night, it was the Rockets who triumphed to move above Somerset in the Premier League table. |
