Somerset Rebels 58-36 Glasgow Tigers

Ian Belcher
What, on paper, looked a potentially difficult match for the Somerset Rebels turned out to be anything but, as the Rebels tore apart a very poor Glasgow outfit.

Premier League
Somerset Rebels - 58: Magnus Zetterstrom (14, +1 ), Glen Phillips (7, +2 ), Stephan Katt (6, +2 ), Emil Kramer (13 ), Glen Cunningham (11, +1 ), Simon Walker (4, +1 ), Ben Barker (3, +1 )
Glasgow Tigers - 36: Danny Bird (7), David McAllen (2, +2), Lee Dicken (5, +2), Kauko Nieminen (13), Shane Parker (5), Robert Ksiezak (4), James Cockle (0)

The home side were superior in every department, with greater speed and determination to pass the opposition.

The meeting was effectively over by the halfway stage. Glasgow were 14 points in arrears - their only heat victory came in heat seven, courtesy of Kauko Nieminen's second place whilst on a tactical ride.

In contrast, the Rebels had secured three maximum 5-1 heat advantages in the first six races.

With the match beyond them, all the Tigers had to fight for was the bonus point. Despite a second tactical ride heat advantage in heat 11, even this was a lost cause as the home riders kept piling on the points.

With Danny Bird and Shane Parker so ineffective, the Tigers had little to counter the Rebels. However, a late burst by Lee Dicken, by way of a heat victory in heat 12, saw him deservedly take his place in the nominated final heat 15.

In that same heat, the Rebels emphasised the difference in class between the two sides in recording their fifth maximum heat win of the night, Magnus Zetterstrom and Emil Kramer giving a classic display of team riding.

Zetterstrom and Glenn Cunningham looked particularly impressive for the home side, the latter recording his first maximum of the season.

There were also top-class performances from Glen Phillips and Emil Kramer, who's only dropped points came at the hands of Nieminen, the Finn being all that stood between the Rebels and a completed rout.
