Review: T4 on the Beach 2006

Chris Ellis and Emily Littler
Weston-super-Mare hosted T4 on the Beach 2006 on Sunday 18 June. BBC Somerset reporters Chris Ellis and Emily Littler rubbed shoulders with all the celebs at the star-studded event.

Emily's report

Boy Kill Boy at T4 on the Beach
Boy Kill Boy's Chris Peck

Never before have I seen such a wide variation of artists on one stage - from Busta Rhymes, to All American Rejects, and from Boy Kill Boy to the Pet Shop Boys, there was truly something for everyone.

Having been a member of the crowd last year, I knew how big the audience was, so when I saw the spectators this year, I knew it was a LOT bigger. It took me around 20 minutes to get from one side to the other - it seems the Weston-super-Mare mass couldn't get enough of the T4 talent.

Another element that was different from 2005's T4 on the Beach, was the weather. Boys and girls flocked to the stage in skirts, shorts and bikini tops, only to find that the clouds had replaced the beaming sun that had graced T4's presence last year.

I even felt a tad of rain at times - but it didn't seem to change the fantastic atmosphere. So, let's get onto the good stuff - the bands.

Good music and nice totty!

Basement Jaxx brought a live, jazzy feel to the beach, with the crazy ladies strutting their stuff on the Weston stage.

Pet Shop Boys at T4 on the Beach
Musical legends, Pet Shop Boys were at the event

Playing hits such as Good Luck, they certainly went down well on the day.

Razorlight brought a more relaxed feel to the stage, smoothly serenading Weston-super-Mare with Golden Touch. However, I don't think the boys performed as well as they could have.

Simon Webbe was definitely one for the ladies, giving a soulful performance of all his chart hits.

The Pet Shop Boys really made an effort with their performance. Having never seen them before on stage, I loved to see the dressing up, the weirdness of the starry sunglasses, and the dancing soldiers. They really did perform, and gave a good set to the beach.

All American Rejects, Boy Kill Boy, The Feeling and The Automatic, all provided Weston-super-Mare with a rocky feel, due to them bringing indie-rock back into the charts.

Fantastic performances by all, very energetic and passionate. Boy Kill Boy couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces, which I think sums up the great atmosphere of the day.

Pussycat Dolls and Dannii Minogue danced their way through their sets, creating a huge dance frenzy on Weston's beach. The audience obviously enjoyed their talent - especially the men!

Feeder and Embrace played classic sets - Feeder's Buck Rogers was the highlight of my day. Embrace played their hearty World Cup song World at Your Feet, and had a noticeable bond with the crowd.

There were many more acts that I haven't mentioned, but the ones I have were some of the best for me. With totty like Vernon Kay and Steve Jones presenting, the whole day was very, very fun!

I'm sure everyone took away good memories from T4 on the Beach 2006 - I know I certainly did.

Behind the scenes... by Chris Ellis

Behind the huge stage was where I was based. Armed with a microphone, I was waiting to pounce on the wide variety of celebrities that had attended the event on Weston's shore.

Embrace on stage
Embrace entertained the huge crowds

You can listen to all my interviews, by clicking on the audio links on the right of this page.

With over 20 bands and artists, and many other 'random' celebrities, I managed to track down Jade Goody, and Alan Carr from The Friday Night Project - he was as hilarious in real life as on TV.

I also had a quick word with living legend Noel Edmunds, who thinks the West Country is a special place - especially Devon... boo hiss!

The majority of the bands and artists were extremely willing to be interviewed. In particular, Feeder, The Feeling, Dannii Minogue, Shayne Ward and Embrace were all extremely friendly and approachable.

Hip hop, indie, rock and pop

I think the unique variation in bands and artists that were present on the T4 stage would rarely be repeated at any festival or event.

Feeder sent the crowd wild
Grant Nicholas from Feeder on stage

Towards the end of the event, I entered the Golden Circle, just below the stage, to see a few of the bands. Hard-Fi and Feeder were both incredible - both Living for the Weekend and Lost and Found echoed throughout the town and sent the crowd wild. These two songs were personal favourites of mine!

The Ordinary Boys were great to see too, and a surprise late-addition to the event.

Will Young closed the show, and with such a wide diversity of massive artists and bands, T4 on the Beach 2006 will be a music event to be remembered by thousands.
