I always like these sorts of things. A small venue, basic lighting, no sound checks or technical faults, not even a stage, just a hot corner in Chard's rugby club. Doesn't sound too appealing? It's these sorts of situations where you see bands performing at their rawest, and when you, as an audience member, have a much closer relationship with them. First on were The Luscious Rickys. Starting off well, the guys kicked in with their renowned attitude of coolness and cheek! They undoubtedly know what their style is, and play their songs professionally and in the fun way that just makes you want to dance. It would be interesting to see them try a few covers - with the right choices, I'm sure the result would be a fantastic experiment. Opening the night, it was bound to be hard to get the party started, and the guys ended up finishing their set early, cutting out some of their best songs. It seemed a little out of spirit and implied that the guys were becoming a tad too big for their boots. However, there is no doubt that these guys are worth seeing live on stage, with the lights, the big crowd... the whole shebang, if you want to call it that! Look out for The Luscious Rickys this summer. The Jellyfish Incident Next up were The Jellyfish Incident, the trendy trio of hair. It's clear this band just wants to have a good time, and this mood oozes from them and into the crowd.  | | The Jellyfish Incident |
With song titles such as Snazzy, You Bore Me Like Politics and Stupid Kinda Sexy, you can't really go wrong with these lads. Usually with 'funny' bands like this, the music quality lacks, but this is not the case with The Jellyfish Incident. Their passion for their music and the sound they make is proper funky. Again, it would be interesting to see them experiment with a few cover songs. Inside information tells me that recordings of their new songs are on the way, and with this sort of progression, we could be seeing a lot more from The Jellyfish Incident - I hope so anyway! Worthy of their headline title, Contact played their set well. They certainly added their own style to covers such as Should I Stay or Should I Go? (The Clash), and played their own songs with professionalism and poise. Their musicianship on stage was felt across the room, and their uniqueness gathered interest in the crowd. Having visibly improved since their set at the Rockfest, I look forward to hearing more of Contact, and possibly seeing an album or two of theirs swing its way into 2006. |
