Aggregate: Somerset Rebels 98-91 Exeter Falcons Listen to an interview with Magnus Zetterstrom after the return leg in Exeter: Another big derby crowd experienced another entertaining meeting (at the Oak Tree Arena), in which the Rebels' heat leader duo of Magnus Zetterstrom and Glenn Cunningham were unbeaten by an opponent. The acquisition of a new engine certainly spurred the Falcons' number two Lee Smethills on, as he passed the leading Zetterstrom with ease only to pull up with an engine failure, helping the Rebels to a 4-2 heat advantage. After the first heat shock of seeing the Rebels' skipper passed, heat two saw the unfamiliar Falcons' reserve duo of British-based Pole Artur Boginczuk and guest Luke Priest take the early lead. This potential 5-1 was short lived as Chris Mills passed them both and was then joined by a resurgent Lee Smart who rode a determined race to earn a paid win. Another head advantage to the Rebels in heat three saw the home side already eight points up and were unlucky not to go further in the lead in heat four when Mills broke down whilst in a scoring position. A 4-2 to Somerset followed in heat five where Ritchie Hawkins pegged an uncharacteristic Mark Lemon to the back in a tremendous battle. A further six points were added to the lead that the Rebels had built up giving them a 16-point advantage at just heat seven. The only-impressive Falcon Smethills was, however, given a tactical ride in heat eight and secured the heat win after Boginczuk flipped his machine on the line. A miniature fightback now emerged as Emilano Sanchez who was guesting for the Falcons inflicted a rare defeat over Paul Fry, who only just passed Priest before the race was stopped through Hawkins taking a tumble. With the Rebels' lead now cut to just 11 points, it was time that Somerset really kicked into gear, as they recorded three maximum heat advantages in the last five heats. This however could have been four: the unlucky Paul Fry suffered a snapped primary chain on the last bend of heat 15 while following Zetterstrom. Smart who was deputising for the absent Simon Walker also featured in a maximum heat win when he rode a great race to follow Fry home ahead of the Falcons' duo Boginczuk and the disappointing Seemond Stephens. Yet again the Somerset faithful were treated to a solid team performance and an entertaining meeting to end the season. Let's hope that this fixture will be repeated in 2006 with the Falcons in their new home. |
