Ritchie Hawkins
Ritchie Hawkins went down in heat five

Premier League: Somerset 43-51 Isle of Wight

Dave Thompson
The home fans were looking forward to celebrating with a win against the Isle of Wight team, but bad luck, some mechanical problems, and a powerful away side, conspired against them.

The opening four heats saw great wins from the Islanders.

It wasn't until the ill-fated heat five that the Rebels produced a heat winner, with Paul Fry taking the points.

Fry and Ritchie Hawkins both got decent starts, before Hawkins went down on the last lap. He was down on the track for several minutes, before shakily regaining his feet to walk back to the pits

It was the last part he played in the meeting, as he was excluded from the race, and then withdrew from the remainder of the meeting.

The Rebels, now down a man and eight points behind, came storming back with wins from Magnus Zetterstrom in heat six and Jamie Smith in heat eight.

The relief was short-lived, however, as in the very next race, Paul Fry threw a chain just a few yards from the finish. The visitors, therefore picked, up full points.

Searching for points

The Rebels were on a major quest for points in heat 10. Skipper Magnus Zetterstrom, and his partner Jamie Smith, made superb starts, before Krister Marsh grabbed second spot from Smith on the first bend.

The powerful Ostergaard then challenged Smith, and a battle commenced. It was only concluded when both Smith and Ostergaard came to grief at exactly the same time, on the same spot, and totally independently of each other.

Smith's fighting efforts to keep the young Dane behind ended when he locked up, and suffered an horrendous-looking fall, crashing heavily to the dirt.

Meanwhile, Ostergaard was also sent tumbling to the track when his chain snapped, at the exact moment of Smith's crash.

Referee Mick Posselwhite had no alternative but to exclude both riders, and the race was awarded 3-2.

A close race

Glenn Cunningham recorded his first win of the evening in heat 11. The turning point came in heat 12, with Simon Walker having to deputise for the injured Hawkins.

This left the Rebels' reserves to cope with Marsh and Jason Doyle, with the inevitable result of a 1-5 advantage to the away side.

Magnus Zetterstrom made a superb start alongside Craig Boyce in heat 13, which left the Rebels to take a 5-3 advantage.

Heat 14 went 6-3 to the Rebels, leaving the Islanders to take the match points.

The concluding heat might have been a formality, but it didn't stop Magnus Zetterstrom and Ulrich Ostergaard from giving another display of close, hard racing, before the Dane got the better of the battle.

The result could have been so different without the loss of Ritchie Hawkins so early in the tie, and the numerous mechanical problems suffered by the home side.

Paul Fry collected the Rider of the Night trophy, and Glen Cunningham picked up the Most Entertaining Rider trophy.
