Paul Fry won three heats

Premier League: Newport 41-49 Somerset

The Rebels recorded their first away league win of the season, despite the loss of two riders. Jamie Smith and Ritchie Hawkins were both absent, after picking up knocks against the Isle of Wight.

The Rebels management spent the whole weekend on the phone trying to recruit a guest for Smith. Former Rebel David Meldrum, currently riding for Sittingbourne, agreed to replace Smith, with Rider Replacement for Hawkins.

The Rebels must have thought they had brought Friday's bad luck with them, as they went 13-5 down after only three heats.

The following three heats brought the Rebels back in contention. Glenn Cunningham scored the first away win in heat four, after a fast start from Tony Atkin.

Double somersaults

Heat five saw Kyle Legault take advantage of Magnus Zetterstrom. With the race his for the taking, he appeared to pick up some unexpected grip, and, like others have found in the past, was carted helplessly into the safety fence.

The resulting crash, and double somersault down the home straight, looked horrendous, but thankfully Legault rose to his feet, unharmed.

Heat six completed the Rebels comeback, with a 5-1 from Cunningham and Simon Walker.

Heat seven seemed destined to end without much incident, but Lee Dicken, close behind Walker, had to take drastic avoiding action so as not to collect the Rebels' reserve. On the slow down lap, an agitated Dicken made his feelings known to Walker.

The Rebels took control of the match from heat eight onwards, not allowing the Wasps a single heat win, or heat advantage.

Cunningham kept up his great start to the match with his third straight win in heat nine.

A win for the Rebels

Heat 10 had to be stopped, as Chris Mills, who had earlier fallen and remounted, had fallen for a second time, and looked in danger of not clearing the track.

In the re-run, Paul Fry made a fast start, only to be passed around the outside of the second turn by Henrik Vedel.

Then, as the riders approached the last bend, Vedel ran wide and was sucked into the safety fence. He picked himself, and the bike, up to push home for a point.

Zetterstrom led heat 11 from the first turn, and heat 12 might have seen the Rebels take a clean sweep of heat advantages, had Simon Walker been able to overcome a big lock-up on the fourth turn.

Heat 13 saw Legault take the Rider Replacement ride, splitting the Rebels pairing, and heat 14 saw Paul Fry take his third win of the afternoon.

The Rebels completed the job in the final heat, with Magnus Zetterstrom leading from the start.
