Maxwell Hoyal
Maxmanic at Weston Wheels 2004

DJ Maxmanic

DJ Maxmanic, from Taunton, is predominantly filthy and dirty, but also random and unexpected. Crikey!

Real name

Maxwell Hoyal

DJ name

Maxmanic

Where in Somerset are you from?

Taunton. Oooo arrr. I moved down from Cardiff about a year ago.

How, and why, did you get started?

I was living in West Wales as a teenager and went to a lot of raves and underground nights.

I loved it, and wanted to be part of it, so I began to learn to mix. Within only a few months I had entered my first DJ competition and won best runner-up prize.

It was the first time I had played to a crowd and I was instantly hooked. It's been a good few years now and the style of music keeps changing, as does the clubbing scene, but my love of DJ-ing is still the same.

Where do you DJ locally?

Maxwell Hoyal
Maxmanic DJs in Weston-super-Mare

I will be appearing at the Weston Wheels 2005 event in August, where I won the DJ competition last year. I'm also starting a regular slot with Ralph Mignano at his new night in Weston.

What's your style?

Postmodern! It's predominantly filthy, dirty UK-NRG, but I always mix something random and unexpected into my sets – this may be house, hip hop, techno, progressive, breaks, or even something classical.

Michael Jackson and Tom Jones are amongst my favourites... oh... and my recently acquired Jive Bunny Party Anthems!

What do you listen to when you're not DJ-ing?

Myself! I do a lot of my own productions, so I'm often listening to dodgy samples.

Also, metal and punk bands like Linkin Park, Alice in Chains, Green Day, and also Tom Jones - that man is a legend!

Who's your fave DJ?

There are a fair few, but off the top of my head it would be Luke McMillan (aka DJ Producer), Prime Cuts and Tony Vegas, Ilogik, Andy Farley, and local Cardiff boys Cally and Juice.

Where would you most like to play?

One of the large London venues such as Brixton Academy or SE1.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

I used to be a semiprofessional aggressive in-line skater. I have a GCSE in Welsh. I am a budding magician!
