Heat one, in previous weeks, had led to heat advantages for the visitors. However, a determined race by Rebels captain, Magnus Zetterstrom, saw him round the Falcons' number one Mark Lemon, putting the Rebels 4-2 in the lead.

The following heat, however, saw the Falcons' reserve duo of Lee Smethills and Ben Barker record a 5-1 to take Exeter into the lead.

This was the only time that the Devon side were to lead the meeting, as Somerset racked up heat advantages in the next four heats, including two 5-1s.

Action-packed heats

It wasn't until heat seven that the Exeter manager, Graeme Gordon, could use his tactical rider.

His faith in Antonin Svab paid off to reward the Falcons with a 7-2 advantage, pulling the deficit back to just five points.

Once again the Falcons' comeback was short-lived, as heat eight saw the Rebels gain another 5-1 in an action-packed heat.

Jason King went on to win, but was under pressure throughout the heat from a lively Ben Barker, who was unlucky to be passed by a ruthless move from Jamie Smith on the last bend.

After heat advantages in heat nine, from the reliable Ritchie Hawkins and Paul Fry pairing, and in heat 10, from Zetterstrom and Smith, the Rebels found themselves with a comfortable 15-point lead, and a one-point lead in the battle for the bonus point.

Mark Lemon tried all he could in heat 11, whilst on a tactical ride, to pass Glenn Cunningham, but it was the Bristolian that held on for the win.

Battle for the bonus point

The next four heats produced some tremendous racing, as Somerset battled hard for the bonus point.

Zetterstrom was unlucky to be passed by Lemon in heat 13, whilst Fry made a whole-hearted effort to pass a quick Svab in heat 14, drawing alongside him on the last lap, but not quite finding enough speed to take the win.

Like all great speedway meetings, this local derby culminated in a last heat decider. This time, though, the home win was securely in the bag.

Only a 5-1 advantage to the Rebels would see them take the bonus point. An epic battle ensued between the two number ones, as Zetterstrom and Lemon passed and re-passed.

The Falcons' number one, however, gained the upper hand in a classic speedway race, where each rider produced some intelligent moves to gain the advantage.
