In the restart, the Bandits pair raced to a 5-1. Another followed in the reserves' heat from the extremely powerful duo of Scott Smith and Carl Wilkinson, both recent additions to the Berwick line-up. The Rebels came roaring back, taking the next five heats by a margin of 21-9, to lead 23-19 by heat seven. In heat seven, Glenn Cunningham (who was celebrating his 30th birthday) won with a power-packed drive around the boards. Jason King took third place, but not before pulling off a tremendous piece of riding after losing control in lap two. He worked miracles, not only to stay on the bike, but also to hold off Chris Schramm for the remainder of the race. In heat eight, Adam Pietraszko and Carl Wilkinson made the best start, and brought the scores back level at the half-way stage. Advantage for the Rebels The next three heats were shared, leaving the match at 33-33. Heat 10 went to Zetterstrom, and Cunningham took heat 11 with another charged run around the fence. The last four heats produced some great racing, and another exciting Oak Tree finish, with a last heat decider. Heat 12 saw Jason King complete a great night's work, storming round the outside of both opponents, tight against the fence. Jamie Smith was having his own personal battle with Chris Schramm, after passing him on the inside of the first bend. The duel ended spectacularly when Schramm tried a big outside move off the final turn, only to run wide into the safety fence on the home straight, catapulting himself high into the air. Thankfully he was unhurt, and was quickly back on his feet, leaving the Rebels with a 4-2 advantage. The final heats Zetterstrom and Cunningham came to the tapes in heat 14. Zorro made a blinding start to lead, with Glenn producing another stunning outside run to pass the whole field, with the pairing going on to record a maximum heat win. Ritchie Hawkins was denied his own maximum in spectacular fashion in heat 14. After missing the start, he was forced wide by Scott Smith on the first two bends and left in third place. He battled hard, picking up a lot of drive around the outside, and after two laps he caught Smith at the first bend. As he moved around the outside, Smith again kept a wide line, denying Hawkins space, and with nowhere to go, he hit the deck and was excluded. With the match not yet won, and the scores at 43-41, the final heat again saw Zetterstrom and Cunningham in for the Rebels, against Pietraszko and Scott Smith. Despite the close attentions of Pietraszko, Zorro kept second spot for the Rebels to record another 5-1. |
