The Comets were quick out of the blocks, with their skipper Carl Stonehewer accounting for his Somerset counterpart in heat one.

The reserves heat gave the Somerset crowd their first look at the talented James Wright, who led his partner, Jamie Courtney, to a 5-1-heat advantage.

The Rebels immediately hit back with their own top 5-1 team of Paul Fry and Ritchie Hawkins.

The next five heats produced four shared heats, and saw the Comets with a halfway lead of 22-26.

Smart's great start

Heat six should have been an opportunity for the Rebels pairing of Magnus Zetterstrom and Jamie Smith to pull back some points, but again they were thwarted.

Heat seven saw Lee Smart make a great start to take third spot in front of Scott Robson.

Smart rode a fantastic race to hold him off, but the more experienced Comets man bullied his way through with a hard move, going into the final lap.

The second half of matches have proved to be the Rebels downfall recently, and they now looked to be deep in trouble, trailing 21-31 with just six heats left.

With all four riders on the line, and only seconds left before the start, Jamie Smith went back to the pits with a problem in the next heat.

He was almost immediately excluded under the two-minute rule. Jason King, who did a creditable job taking third place behind his skipper and Shaun Tacey, replaced him.

After a shared heat, and a 2-4 to the Comets, heat 13 arrived. Glenn Cunningham stormed around the boards to fly past the Comets' skipper.

It took the Workington man until the last lap to find the fast line, but by then it was too late and Cunningham comfortably held on from a fast closing.

Team potential

Now six points down, and with two heats to go, the Rebels needed something special, which came in the form of Paul Fry and Jason King.

The pair rode home for a much needed 5-1 win, which reduced the deficit to two points, 41-43.

However, in the last heat decider, the Rebels pairing of Paul Fry and Glenn Cunningham had to be content with second and third spots, and a share of the points.

With the deficit at two points, the Rebels now need to keep it close.

Although the team has the potential to beat anyone in the Premier League, they all need to pull together at the same time, something which has proved difficult over the last few weeks.
