Magnus Zetterstrom
Magnus did the business

Premier League: Somerset 44-46 Sheffield

Graham Hambly
Sheffield shrugged off the handicap of being without injured skipper Sean Wilson to beat Somerset, after a last heat decider in a closely contested clash at the Oak Tree Arena.

The Rebels needed a 5-1 in the final heat to gain a last gasp victory.

They looked on course when Magnus Zetterstrom and Paul Fry powered away from the start, ahead of Andre Compton and Ricky Ashworth.

But Fry picked up some drive around the outside off the second bend, and came to grief after running out of room.

Although Zetterstrom won the re-run, the 3-3 was enough for Sheffield to gain a narrow victory.

Sheffield take early command

The Tigers had the greater all-round strength, while Somerset lacked the necessary backing for their top men.

Sheffield took early command as they grabbed a six-point lead in the opening two heats.

Somerset did not have the best of starts, with Zetterstrom spinning on the first bend of heat one and bringing down team mate Jamie Smith.

All four riders went back into the re-start, but Ben Wilson, and Sheffield guest Brent Werner, scored a 4-2 against Zetterstrom, with Smith taking another tumble.

In fact, it was a frustrating evening for Smith, who failed to finish any of his four races.

Somerset take the lead

Visiting reserves Trevor Harding and Chris Mills, replacing the unavailable Richard Hall, took maximum points from Lee Smart and Jason King in heat two, to indicate the problems facing the Rebels.

Fry and Ritchie Hawkins picked up a couple of 5-1s in heats three and five to level the scores for the Rebels. They provided excellent support for the top two of Zetterstrom and Glenn Cunningham.

Somerset took the lead for the first time with a two-point advantage, following a 4-2 from Cunningham and King in heat seven.

The visitors were six points ahead following an eventful heat 10, in which Smith suffered his third retirement of the evening, while Zetterstrom trailed home well behind Ashworth and Paul Cooper.

A strong finish

There were still six points separating the teams going into the final three heats, but Somerset nursed hopes of a strong finish to end a frustrating run of only one win in the previous four home matches.

Zetterstrom and Cunningham did the business with a 5-1 over Werner and Andre Compton in heat 13, with Cunningham storming around the outside of Werner to secure second place.

Cunningham dropped only one point during the evening when he finished second to Compton in his opening race.

Fry also enjoyed a successful evening. He made it 11 points from his four programmed rides when he won heat 14 to earn the Rider of the Night award, and left his side two points down going into the final heat.
