The Rebels began promisingly, but struggled in the closing stages, following injuries to Jamie Smith and Ritchie Hawkins.

It looked comfortable for Somerset as they took an eight-point lead with a couple of 5-1s in the opening three heats.

The Comets suffered early problems with reserve Jon Bethell going back 15 metres under the two-minute rule in heat two.

Then fellow reserve Kevin Little was excluded after rearing at the gate. That presented home reserves Lee Smart and Jason King with a 5-1.

Cunningham gets fastest time

Heat three saw Hawkins and Paul Fry pull off a maximum over Scott Robson and Kauko Nieminen to raise hopes of an easy win for the Rebels.

Those were the only two heat advantages achieved by Somerset in a meeting which was halted after 14 heats because of rain.

One of the highlights of the evening came in heat four when Glenn Cunningham flew around the outside of Shaun Tacey to win in 57.78 - the fastest time of the season at the Oak Tree Arena.

In the next heat however, Hawkins suffered a fall which forced him to retire from the remainder of the meeting with a badly bruised back.

Smith was then excluded in heat six following a fall, which also involved Bethell.

Although Smith completed the remainder of his races, he was troubled by a rib injury, suffered at Newport recently.

Rebels are defiant

Rain began falling midway through the meeting and seemed to handicap the home side more than the on-form Comets.

Tacey was Workington's first race winner, when he beat Fry in heat nine, with Little taking third place from Smart.

The Comets followed up with three 5-1s in the next four heats to turn a six-point deficit into a six-point advantage.

They effectively clinched victory in heat 13 when Carl Stonehewer and Tacey battled their way past home skipper Magnus Zetterstrom, and also inflicted the first defeat of the evening on Cunningham.

Fry showed a note of defiance for the Rebels, winning heat 14, but Smart suffered his third successive retirement because of chain problems.

That left Workington with an invincible six-point lead and it was decided against staging the final race because of the deteriorating conditions.
