Aggregate: Reading 93-90 Somerset

The Rebels, operating rider replacement for Jamie Smith (who was absent due to cracked ribs), took the early advantage by establishing a six-point lead after the first two heats.

Skipper Magnus Zetterstrom won heat one, and Ben Barker took third place after the Racers' captain, Andrew Appleton, had to pull up with bike problems.

Misfortune for the Rebels

A maximum 5-1 heat advantage for the Rebels followed in heat two, as reserves Lee Smart and Jason King easily accounted for their Reading counterparts.

Reading hit back in the following two heats to level the scores at 12-all, which included an impressive home debut for their new Czech signing, Zednek Simota.

The Rebels suffered misfortune in heat three, as Paul Fry failed to leave the start line due to bike problems.

Heats five to eight were all shared 3-3 to maintain the match parity at 24-all, as the teams headed into the second-half of the meeting.

Heats nine and 10 proved to be the turning point of the meeting, as Reading established their six-point lead.

Beyond match victory

Despite the efforts of the Rebels septet, typified by Paul Fry's race victory in heat 14, which kept the Rebels in with a chance of the bonus point, the match victory was now beyond them.

Going into heat 15, the Rebels required a maximum 5-1 heat advantage to take the bonus point.

Although Magnus Zetterstrom took the race victory, and in the process inflicted the only defeat of the night on Reading's Zagar, Glenn Cunningham was unable to find a way past the Racers' duo of Zagar and Simota.

So, at the end of a thoroughly entertaining meeting, Reading won and took the bonus point, with the aggregate score of 93-90.

However, yet again the Rebels can look back on another excellent away performance to set them up for the start of their Premier League campaign.
