Somerset battled into a two-point lead on the night after heat six, but were unable to overcome the handicap of operating rider replacement for the injured Jamie Smith. They picked up only two points, a couple of third places by Jason King and Ritchie Hawkins, from the four rider replacement outings. That was not enough to prevent the all-round strength of the visitors inflicting the first home defeat of the season on the Rebels. Rye House take command The Rockets had Mathieu Tresarrieu guesting for reserve Steve Boxall, who dropped out through illness. They took command with a couple of 5-1s in heats seven and eight, which saw them establish a lead they never really looked like losing. Somerset kept the match alive with a 7-1 from Glenn Cunningham and Magnus Zetterstrom in heat 13. This reduced their deficit to four points going into the final two races. Even the tactical ride for Zetterstrom in that race did not go exactly as planned. Zetterstrom took an early lead, while Cunningham had to battle through from the back, spectacularly storming around the outside of Brent Werner and Stuart Robson. Cunningham's momentum also saw him take the lead from his skipper, who had to settle for four points from doubling his second place score. Somerset attempt victory Home reserve Jason King replaced Lee Smart to join Paul Fry in heat 14, as the Rebels tried to snatch a last gasp victory. Jason's younger brother, Daniel King, and Tommy Allen made the early running for the Rockets, until Jason produced a great effort to grab victory in a shared heat. That performance helped him gain the Rider of the Night Award, but the Rebels were still four points down going into the final heat. Cunningham and Zetterstrom went out looking for the 5-1 that would have earned a draw on the night, but Chris Neath stormed into the lead and held on for the victory that saw Rye House continue their impressive start to the season. Thrilling action That was Zetterstrom's only defeat by a visiting rider, and he took the award as the Most Entertaining Rider. He had some exciting battles on the way to winning his opening three races. Heat six saw the Swede squeeze inside visiting skipper Brent Werner to grab the lead on the first lap. Then, in heat 10, he figured in some thrilling action as he worked his way through on the inside of Neath. That was the only defeat on track for the visiting number three, although he missed out in his opening race when he was excluded for a tapes offence. Home favourite Fry was then excluded in the re-run after being penalised for going inside Tresarrieu, who took a tumble on the first bend. |
