Aggregate: Isle of Wight 94-86 Somerset The Rebels faced a 10-point deficit from the trip to Smallbrook earlier in the week. They looked on course to turn that margin around when a 5-1 from Jamie Smith, and Jason King saw them take an eight-point lead after eight heats at the Oak Tree Arena. The Islanders came back strongly, however, with four successive 4-2 heat wins to level the score on the night with three heats remaining. It was as well for Somerset that Paul Fry was on top form with his best score of the season to lead the victory charge. The Rebels stalwart was well supported by Glenn Cunningham, who showed signs of returning to his best form after a mixed start to the season. Fry began the evening well with a couple of heat wins, squeezing inside the impressive Krister Marsh to win heat three and then inflicting Boyce's only defeat of the evening in heat five. Cunningham opened with a win in heat four but was then caught out by the lively Ulrich Ostergaard, who came flying around the outside of Cunningham to win heat seven. Somerset still looked comfortable enough, however, with a 28-20 lead after heat eight. The Islanders battled back in heat nine after Ritchie Hawkins was excluded when Jason Doyle fell on the first bend. Boyce and Doyle cashed in with a 4-2 against Fry in the re-run. Then came a further setback for the Rebels in heat 10. Ostergaard stormed around the outside of Smith to take the lead on the third lap with home skipper Magnus Zetterstrom in hot pursuit. Zetterstrom tried an ambitious attempt to snatch victory by going outside Ostergaard on the last bend. But the Swede came to grief by the pits gate, gifting third place to Marsh - and a 4-2 advantage to the visitors. Boyce and Manuel Hauzinger collected a 4-2 against Cunningham and Lee Smart in heat 11. Then a switch of reserves for the Islanders paid off in heat 12 with Steen Jensen collecting his second win of the evening while Hawkins had to work hard to grab second place from Marsh. So it was all square going into heat 13 in which Boyce maintained his winning sequence ahead of Cunningham and Zetterstrom, who finished with a disappointing return of five (paid six) from his four outings. Fry laid the foundations for Somerset's narrow win on the night when he held off the challenge of Ostergaard in heat 14 while talented reserve King took third place ahead of Doyle, who fell when he picked up some extra drive on the last lap. Boyce rounded off an excellent evening with his fifth win in the final heat, but Cunningham and Fry did the necessary to secure victory for the Rebels by holding the minor placings ahead of Ostergaard. |
