Weston Beach Race pledges to stay in resort until 2010

Weston-super-Mare will continue to host the world's largest motorcycle race until at least 2010.

The organisers of the annual Weston Beach Race, RHL Activities, have signed a five-year extension to their existing contract with North Somerset Council.

"The plan for the next five years is to continue working with North Somerset Council to make the event bigger and better."

"We are pleased to have agreed a five-year extension to the contract," said Gareth Hockey of RHL Activities.

"Hopefully, since we took over the running of the race three years ago, we have shown how we want to improve the event and what we have been prepared to invest to make the Beach Race the best in the world.

"The plan for the next five years is to continue working with North Somerset Council to make the event bigger and better.

"Hopefully the business community of Weston will have seen over the past three years what we are trying to achieve and that we are committed to the town. I would urge them to join with us and the council to keep this event growing."

"We are delighted that RHL will be bringing the Beach Race to Weston for at least another five years," said Cllr Alan Hockridge, who's in charge of economic development at North Somerset Council.

"We will continue to work with them to build on this popular event as businesses in the town benefit greatly from the huge influx of visitors."

Warm greeting from hoteliers

The announcement was also welcomed by James Moncrieff, President of the Weston Hotels and Restaurants Association.

"We are very pleased with the news of the five-year contract and look forward to working with the organisers to ensure the event continues to be a success for all concerned," he said.

The Beach Race has been held in Weston for the past 22 years. Last year's event attracted around 1,000 riders over the two days and an estimated 80,000 spectators to the town.

This year's race will be taking place slightly earlier than usual over the weekend of 1 and 2 October to fit in with local tide conditions and the motocross racing calendar.

Its an awesome event that brings people from all over the world to weston... i spectated for 7 years then i raced it for the 1st time in 07' and will be there again in 08'Shame the cost for getting in to watch has got so expensive.i got into enduro racing because i wanted to race at weston.!!

yeah i think weston was very good, as always, but there was just 2 many riders this year. 2 many 'traffic jams' on the dunes. i wanted 2 do it but sponsers wouldnt let me :(

It's good that it has been given the extension. The only problem is will the organisers keep getting the crowed when each year the increase of entrance fee's have reason drastricly. £15 for adualts is a bit steep to watch mainly a novices race with a few named people. Come on get real with the prices.

We at cornwall are well cheesed off with the organisers for changing the date of the race. We have been coming to watch and race for many years, but changing the date has ment that are usual hotel was fully booked that weekend so couldn't accommadate us. Did they think of the Hotels and the regulars that keep these things going. Because of this we have to miss out this Year. Very annoyed

Brilliant!! Just goes to show that we off-road bikers are a dedicated and responsible bunch of lads, who are not out to cause havoc, and who realise that a one day event on a beach, as long as it is properly organised, is not going to cause desecrate the wonderful beaches throughout our country! Wish other councils in Britain would take a leaf out of Somersets book!

Hi, I'd just like to say wel done for signing this deal.My father did the beach race, and now alot of the pro-riders also either do it or go to watch it. It is part of motocross heritage & it would be a shame to have lost such a good annual ending to the motocross year! It is also one of the few times riders, and teams get chance to let their hair down and enjoy some social time together. You cant beat it!

A fantastic event. I rode a quad in the 2003 race and survived despite being a 53 year old with an artificial hipjoint. Our son has done it 3 times on 2 wheels. Long Live the Weston Beach Race !

The 2004 beach race was awesome, even the bad weather on the saturday didnt spoil the enjoyment. Our son is desperate to ride his 85 this year as he was so inspired by the other youth riders. Long may it reign!
