The Wine Test
How to enjoy alcohol without harming your liver…
We’ve just unearthed the benefits of drinking two glasses of red wine every day, but is there a method to drinking it which will limit the effects of feeling drunk and help prevent a hangover the next day?
When we absorb alcohol it is dissolved into the blood and distributed in the blood, water and tissues. Tissues which are rich in water, for example muscles, take up more alcohol from the blood than those rich in fat which is why women, who have a higher percentage of body fat than men, feel the effects of alcohol more. The amount of water available for alcohol to distribute also depends on body weight and builds which explains why some people are tipsy on two glasses and others smugly claiming no effect.
Alcohol absorption is most rapid when the stomach is empty, passing into the bloodstream more quickly and hitting the brain faster.
Amazingly, the Peak Blood Alcohol Consumption reached when alcohol is taken with a meal may only reach 50% of that reached when alcohol is taken on an empty stomach. In the presence of food in the stomach up to 20% of ingested alcohol may be oxidised before it can be absorbed into the blood.
The best way to drink red wine? With a good meal.
