TM Dilshan resigned as captain in all three formats of the game with immediate effect, the SLC said in a statment. Anjelo Mathews is appointed vice captain for the upcoming tour of Australia. The sports minister, meanwhile, says he is considering changes in the cricket management including the coach, manager and the structure of the team. He was commenting one media reports that suggested Geoff Marsh is to be replaced by Graham Ford of South Africa as the national coach and Ranjith Fernando to replace Anura Tennakoon as the manager of the manager. “We will make these changes known before the team's departure to Australia,” Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told BBC Sinhala service, Sandeshaya. 'Player strike' He dismissed media reports of an impending industrial action by national cricket players saying he is yet to be informed of any such action.
Sports editor of Daily Mirror newspaper, Channaka de Silva, reported on Saturday that young players of the national team who have been suffering heavily from financial burdens are considering taking industrial action if the matter is not resolved soon. “I was not informed by the players of any strike action but I expect to resolve the issue of unpaid salaries by March,” the minister added. Sports analysts, meanwhile, point out that those holding office in a media institution are barred from holding any office in a sports body. 'Violating law' Therefore, it is against the Sports Act 1973 for Nishantha Ranatunga to hold the office of SLC Secretary, say analysts.
Mr Ranatunga is the CEO of Carlton Sports Network (CSN). “No there is no such law. It is the journalists who cannot hold any office,” was Minister Aluthgamage’s response. He, however, pledged to investigate any irregularities in electing the new office bearers of the SLC. “If somebody lodges a complaint against Mr Nishantha Rantunga holding the office, I can investigate,” the minister told BBC Sandeshaya. “And I can either sack him or allow him stay after the investigation,” he added when pointed out that former SLC president, Thilanga Sumathipala was barred from contesting due to his links with Lakbima newspaper. | LOCAL LINKS Sri Lanka has enough talent - new selector20 January, 2012 | Sandeshaya 'Five years' to resolve SLC crisis16 January, 2012 | Sandeshaya SLC rivals withdraw over 'political pressure'02 January, 2012 | Sandeshaya Sri Lanka national players not paidSandeshaya Cricketers will be paid 'next week'04 December, 2011 | Sandeshaya Ranatunga admits Singapore dealSandeshaya CWG bid and cricket debt 'not linked'13 November, 2011 | Sandeshaya 'No coverage' to Sri Lanka cricket fans22 October, 2011 | Sandeshaya EXTERNAL LINKS The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
