Intimidation, threats and violence has been reported in Kilinochchi but the police deny the accusations

The former Tamil Tiger stronghold Kilinochchi has been marred with violence and intimidation but Jaffna has been peaceful during the elections for the local bodies on Saturday, journalists say.

A youth organizer of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has been transferred to Jaffna hospital after an assault using a pistol allegedly by a pro-government ex-militant group.

Sunderalingam Yogeswaran is the chief youth wing organiser of the TNA and a local school teacher.

In addition, a private tuition class building belongs to TNA supporter in Kilinochchi has been set on fire in the run up to the election day and the TNA said some of its supporters even received death threats.

Huge contrast

Journalist Dinasena Ratugamage who travelled to Jaffna and Kilinochchi says there has been a huge contrast between the two cities, in terms of voter enthusiasm, percentage of votes cast as well as violence.

Voter turn out has been very low in Jaffna

Mr Rathugamage says the voters in Jaffna were seemed to be less enthusiastic but the situation in Kilinochchi was different as all the voters there are those who were recently resettled.

“And many government politicians were in Kilinochchi during the campaign,” he says.

There have also been accusations of individuals in military uniform distributing free food parcels and forcing voters to vote for the ruling coalition in Kilinochchi district.

But the police deny the accusations.

Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told BBC Sandedhsaya that the fact that the voter turnout in Kilinochchi was as high as 65% shows that accusations of violence were completely false.

The TNA has lodged several complaints with the commissioner of elections.
