Pay hike for plantation workers
Tea
The Joint Trade Union Federation for the estate sector has been able to negotiate a pay hike for the plantation sector workers.

According to the collective agreement signed with the Employers Federation, the daily wage of an Estate Employee has been increased from Rs. 405 to Rs. 515.

Speaking on behalf of the joint trade unions S. Ramanathan said that they were satisfied with the deal they have been able to obtain.

The agreement is valid for two years.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said that this collective agreement has betrayed the workers. The JVP was campaigning for a minimum salary increase of Rs 750.00

The convener of the National Plantation Workers Union, former parliamentarian, V. Puthrasingamni pointed out that the increase did not match the rising cost of living.
