LTTE suspects to be released
The Attorney General’s Department has recommended the immediate release or transfer for rehabilitation of 676 LTTE suspects held in Boossa and Omanthai camps.

The Attorney General ordered an inquiry as a result of interim recommendations made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

LLRC recommendation

A team headed by Deputy Solicitor General Shavendra Fernando, interviewed detainees at Boossa and Omanthai to assess the situation.

“The LLRC was considering the requests of the relatives of the detainees who were asking to expedite the legal proceedings or to release them”. Said, the Media adviser to the LLRC, Lakshman Wickramasinghe.

Relatives plea

“In the sessions in North and the East, about five thousand people presented written submissions and over five hundred people appeared in front of the LLRC to give evidence”. said Wickramasinghe.

Of some 11,900 detainees, over 6,000 have been released so far after rehabilitation.

Of the 676 LTTE detainees recommended for rehabilitation and subsequent release after completion of the rehabilitation programme, 251 are held at Boossa and 425 at a school premises in Omanthai.

A source from the AG office say, the releasing of the detainees will happen on the 3rd of March to mark the Maha Siva Rathrie festival.

"The legal proceedings against the remaining 'hard core' suspects will begin soon" the source revealed.
