The Chief Justice (cj) of Sri Lanka said that a list of LTTE suspects in detention has been handed over to legal authorities in order to initiate legal proceedings immediately.
The Attorney General (AG) was ordered to use the list of detainees handed to his office by the CJ to facilitate prosecutions or to release the suspects who had been in custody since 2009. CJ Asoka Silva issued the statement on Thursday, at a hearing of a fundamental rights petition filed by a detainee. The Petitionor demanded his release from prolonged detention without trial. Early Release CJ Asoka Silva, hearing the petition, stated to the state counsel that he had handed in a comprehensive list of names of the detainees in custody to the AG’s office. Asoka Silva also said that it is not appropriate to hold detainees for long periods without bringing charges. Assistance from the police should be sought to expedite the proceedings, said the Chief Justice Asoka Silva. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
