800 houses are destroyed and nearly 3000 houses are partially damaged as a result, he added.

The worst affected number of people are from Ampara, in eastern Sri Lanka. The highest overnight rainfall has been recorded in Batticaloa district.

On Sunday, all train services were suspended from Batticaloa as the train tracks were also damaged by the floods.

Minister SM Chandrasena told BBC Sandeshaya that many irrigation tanks were also damaged raising a serious concern over the crop cultivation in the coming months.

Meanwhile, hoteliers in the eastern district of Trincomalee told BBC that the tourist industry has been affected.

The meteorological department said heavy rains will continue till Monday.
