A port without a proper infrastructure is not an international port say the former ports minister of Rajapaksa government, Mangala Samaraweera.

The UNP had decided to boycott the swearing in ceremony of president Rajapaksa to be held on Friday.

Deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya said the ceremony is an extravagant event which he said is a waste of public funds.

"school examinations had been postponed because of the event. Some schools are closed. Many parents are frustrated about these actions. Government offices are closed. Raoads are blocked". Said the UNP.

In an interview with the BBC, party secretary Tilvin Silva said the government needs to take steps to bring down the cost of living.

"Expensive ceremonies, huge spending on the cabinet must be curtailed. Tax revenue is spent on these things putting more burden on the people". he said.
