Sarath Fonseka loses seat
Sri Lankan parliamentary authorities have decided that the former military chief is no more a parliamentary member.

The Secretary General of the Parliament (SGP) has written to the elections commissioner that Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader Sarath Fonseka has lost his parliamentary seat due to imprisonment, an additional elections commissioner confirmed to BBC Sandeshaya.

Opposition challenge

Secretary General Dhammika Kithulagoda on Thursday requested Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka to nominate a member for parliament to fill the vacancy.

The opposition leader as well as the DNA on Thursday in parliament challenged the SGP's letter to the elections commissioner.

Deputy Speaker Priyankara Jayarathne in response told parliament that the decision was in accdordance with the constitution.
