The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF ) is "worried but optimistic" about the forthcoming games in the Indian capital New Delhi says its regional vice president for Asia, Hemasiri Fernando. With just 60 days to go for the games to commence in New Delhi, allegations of corruption and the quality of construction have been raised from many quarters. Reports of sub-standard construction of the venues have been widely reported in the Indian media. He says the CGF is "certainly worried" about the safety of not only the participants but also thousands of spectators who are expected to assemble to witness the games. Mr. Fernando says while he is reluctant to make any comments on the accusations against the local organising committee, he confirms that certain drawbacks and short comings still exist. Corruption and safety He also says that he is confident that the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) and the Indian Government with the experience of organising events like the Asian Games, Afro Asian Games will be in a position to put things in order at the earliest. Hemasiri Fernando agrees that there were issues regarding the updgrading of the existing venues and the construction of new ones which were regularly discussed with the IOA and other associated bodies. The arrangements are well behind the schedule he points out. As such, the CGF has made arrangements for its CEO Michael Cooper to stay put in Delhi and supervise all the activites says regional vice president of the games federation. The CEO of the CGF has already expressed his conern about the smooth conduct of the games and have sought written assurances from the organisers of the Delhi Games. Micheal Cooper has told reproters in New Delhi that he wondered why it took so long for the venues to be finalised. Commenting further Cooper has said the CGF is conerned about the report of the top most anti corruption body in India- Central Vigilance Commission regarding allegations of corruption with regard to the organising of the games and has asked the organising committee to release the said report. The CGF has sought assurances from the local government and the national government that all the buildings comply with the law of the land .
