The captain of Sri Lanka’s national cricket team, Kumar Sangakkara, has reclaimed the top position in the world Test rankings replacing India’s Virender Sehwag.

While Sehwag has been dropped to number two position, Sachin Tendulkar was promoted to fourth position from the sixth, after his double century in Colombo.

Sangakkara’s new deputy, Mahela Jayawardene, is the third best ranked Test batsman, according to latest ICC Test rankings.

“He has some work to do though if he is to climb back up to his previous highest ranking of 11th place,” the ICC said in a statement.

In the latest rankings for Test bowlers, there is no change at the top of the table which is headed by South Africa’s Dale Steyn followed by Pakistan Mohammad Asif.

Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who retired after the first Test against India in Galle, still ranked the third best Test bowler.

Meanwhile, the ICC earlier announced that India would retain the world’s top Test team ranking even if it loses the current series to Sri Lanka by 2-0.

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Galle by 10 wickets. The second Test in Colombo ended in a draw.
