The veteran playwright and dramatist's creative life expands over four decades. He became most popular after Kelani Palama which was first produced in 1978.

His first production was Ledak Nethi Ledek in early 60s. His Ahasin Vetunu Minissu which was produced in 1971, received four awards at the state drama awards; two of them were for Samarakoon’s direction and script.

His Gekurullo won the award for the best novel in the same year. The novel has been translated into Russian and Tamil and later a Sinhala film was produced based on the book.

Eka Kuse Upan Evun, a novel that was published in 1994, was among Samarakooon's most favourite books.

RR Samarakoon has been married to veteran radio announcer and actress Ramya Wanigasekara.
