Identifying the unidentified is a police duty- courts
courts in Sri Lanka
The Police was slammed by courts for not been able to identify those who attacked the residents and caused damage to property in Mattakkuliya, Colombo.

In early July, following a clash between residents and police a number of houses were damaged and residents were assaulted.

Residents charge that the assault took place during heavy police and military presence.

The police informed courts that the attacks were carried out by ‘unidentified persons’.

The judge pointed out that it’s the responsibility of the police to identify suspects and produce them in courts.

“Unidentified suspects are a term that’s frequently used by the police and it’s a joke for the police to say that they have not been able to identify the attackers," said the judge.

Police were directed to further investigate and produce the suspects to courts.

Residents are claiming that the police acted unreasonably after assaulting who a suspect in a drug related case.
