'Tamils do not want devolution' JVP
A year on from the end of the conflict the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) raises questions as to what the government has achieved.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, JVP Secretary General Tilvin Silva says there are still 73,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the displacement camps in Vavuniya according to the UN reports.

blame the government

He blames the Sri Lankan government for not providing them with the necessary facilities to overcome the disastrous conflict they suffered at the final stages of the war.

JVP believes, although development projects are taking place in the post-conflict war zone the government of Sri Lanka is not working towards a political solution.

He says, 'devolution of power is not the solution', the first concerns the Tamil Civilians have is to fulfil their basic human needs.

Real concerns of the tamils

When the journalists pointed out that the Tamil civilians did show their need for devolution by casting a majority of their votes to parties such as Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the largest party representing Tamil people, at the general elections.

JVP Secretary General says "this is not a mechanism in which Tamil people get their voice heard but a mechanism in which the Tamil leaders can gain power; but the leaders have exploited the people's concerns to gain power".

struggle for daily life

Tilvin Silva says that he believes, the mere fact of voting for political parties such as TNA should not be misread as acceptance of devolution by the ordinary Tamil Civilians. He further added "the normal Tamil civilians do not understand the crux of devolution; they do not want devolution, as they are more concerned about their struggle with daily life."
