The Attorney General (AG) in Sri Lanka says that the Supreme Court has allowed the authorities to further detain and question former military commander, Gen Sarath Fonseka. A three-member bench chaired by Chief Justice Asoka de Silva on Monday decided to postpone the hearing of a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed against the detention of Gen Fonseka, MP, until 08 July. The decision paves way for the military to further question the former commander, AG Mohan Peiris told BBC Sandeshaya. The AG has also agreed for a number of interim reliefs requested by Gen Fonseka’s legal team. Vijitha Herath, the General Secretary of Fonseka-led Democratic National Alliance (DNA), told BBC Sandeshaya that the court was informed by the legal team that the authorities failed to obey a previous court ruling to allow relatives, apart from Mrs. Fonseka, to visit him. Mr. Herath, MP, said the AG agreed to abide by the ruling and to provide Gen Fonseka with books and other educational documents. The former commander is facing two courts martial on charges of engaging in politics while in uniform and corruption in military procurement. | LOCAL LINKS Rajapaksa triumphs in final count 21 April, 2010 | Sandeshaya Notice issued to DNA leaders12 April, 2010 | Sandeshaya 'Respect mandate' world urged11 April, 2010 | Sandeshaya Ups and downs in Sri Lanka elections09 April, 2010 | Sandeshaya Fasting monks forcefully removed05 April, 2010 | Sandeshaya Brigadier 'involved' in Lasantha murder 28 March, 2010 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
